Smart Girls Do Dumbbells

Most women have dieted and exercised their entire lives. It’s always the same yo-yo story-lose the weight, gain it back, over and over again. Or they’ll lose most of the weight but they can’t burn off those last stubborn 5-10 pounds. Or they’ve got very intense exercise regimens-personal trainer and all, but still they don’t have the results they’ve been looking for: tight buns, strong arms, and a flat belly. The reason for this is that no one, until now, has been as qualified as Judith Sherman-Wolin, Exercise Specialist at the UCLA Center for Nutrition, to reveal the secrets of dumbbells. Sherman-Wolin has developed a fast, easy dumbbell program that anyone can do at home and can set up for less than it costs to go to a gym every month.

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars excellent for a beginner!
I’m a big fan of this book, and I think it’s excellent for a beginner. I’ve used lots of machine weights, but I’d never really used free weights before. The book has given me lots of confidence in working with free weights and pushing my workout boundaries. I like the variety in exercises provided, and I appreciate the 30 day plan that lays out a month of workouts that alternate between upper and lower body. The author makes sure every workout balances the weight exercises so that you’re working a complete set of muscles.

The one downside to the book (and the reason for only four stars) is that the book does not have information for advancing further in the weight lifting. If you want to keep lifting dumbbells, it’s fine, but I’d also like to move into bar weights. While I don’t expect the book to cover these as well, I do wish the author had made some further recommendations for continued weight lifting.

4 Stars Pretty Good!!
I really thought this book pretty good for someone that was just looking to tone up and learn a few new excersises. It is noto for a workout buff that already has alot of knowledge though. It has alot of stuff in that most people would already know or do in the gym so you really wouldn’t be learning anything. Overall, I did like it though becuase I was not very knowledgable on dumbell work outs and I really enjoy doing them.

5 Stars I Heart This Book
I have many weight training books for women but this book is always in my gym bag and has gone with me to many gyms over the years. My copy is very loved and very used. The layout of this book is easy to follow. The first chapters concentrate on motivation and getting you prepared for weight training.

The stretching, ab and weight exercises have gray edges so you can reference them quickly and not fumble through the book. My favorite feature is her recipes. A workout recipe consists of your instructions for the day. It gives the number of the exercise and with that number you go to the gray pages to look up that exercise.

Each exercise has one to two pages dedicated to it to instruct you about how to do the exercises. The reader will be informed on form and technique. She also gives a chart of how many reps to do for beginner, intermediate and advanced.

The charts and other great features in the book are very easy to follow. Charts/features in the book include:

-Prices for different types of dumbbells (she tells you how to build your weight set for under $100)

-BMI chart

-Aerobic calorie burn

-body evaluation log (body measurements)

-daily dumbbell workout schedule

-exercise readiness questionnaire

-FAQ section.

I don’t prefer machines when it comes to weight training. I want the resistance and the strength I get from the combination of me and the weights. The day by day plans are easy to follow and sometimes it doesn’t even take me 30 minutes. I feel great and accomplished when I finish a recipe. I can do this at home or at the gym and don’t need any fancy equipment.

5 Stars A Motivational Workout Guide
Get started weight training and keep at it with this great workout guide for women. Learn various exercises and be inspired to stick with it.

5 Stars Judith has a new blog!

Fit Pregnancy for Dummies

Fit Pregnancy for Dummies

“…this comprehensive book is for you…all aspects of exercise in pregnancy are covered…” (Health & Fitness, October 2004)

“…practical advice on all aspects of pregnancy…” (Yoga & Health, September 2004)

User Ratings and Reviews

3 Stars Good book for beginners.
I think this book is good for people who are new to exercising. I know it’s a “Dummies” book, but it had too much basic information for me. I ended up returning it.

I am looking for a book that will modify my current workout, and include some new exercises to keep me fit during my pregnancy. If you have a recommendation, please contact me. Thanks

4 Stars Helpful
The book gave very good tips on where to find different activities to do while pregnant. It also includes help for those who haven’t worked out before. Not as much help for someone who was very athletic prior to becoming pregnant. It is really for those who have no or limited knowledge of working out.

5 Stars Awesome Resource
As a fitness enthusiast and mother of three, I loved the peace of mind I got from reading this book. I’ve been exercising all my life and didn’t want to stop when I got pregnant. Cram and Drenth offer a no-nonsense approach to staying fit and healthy from the first trimester to the last. I highly recommend this book.

5 Stars Accurate and accessible
Finally…a fitness guide which accurately covers topics for those women anticipating pregnancy, or who are currently pregnant or post-partum. Too often, pregnancy guides tend towards a patronizing tone and as a physical therapist I find them hard to recommend. This thorough text encourages a woman to trust in herself while giving pointers for seeking professional guidance when necessary. The uplifting tone elevates women thereby encouraging them to begin or continue an active pregnancy both for the benefit of themselves and their babies.

5 Stars An essential for any pregnant exerciser.
Even today many doctors are uneducated and uninformed about exercise and pregnancy. Fit Pregnancy for Dummies is an invaluable resource that can alleviate anxiety one might have about exercising during pregnancy. Expert Catherine Cram provides a wealth of information based on the latest research, numerous ideas and examples for, and motivation, for helping one make healthy decisions about exercising during pregnancy. As a fitness professional and a new mom I have a special appreciation for this work.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Very inspirational and a fun read!
I really enoyed the simplicty of this book, I felt like the author was talking right to me. I’m a Mom and don’t have time to workout so the six minute chunks were perfect. I really enjoyed the nutritional info as it was easy to follow and something that I could manage.

The exercises are very doable and I’ve really enjoyed the DVD’s that go with this book. It’s a great combination and well worth the purchase.

2 Stars Boring, boring
This dvd has a handful of moves that are done repetively. It really bored me. I’m used to intermediate workouts from the Firm and Prevention. While its very easy to follow, I think you can easily get bored.

5 Stars Awesome!!!
She is awesome! the best thing out there! Tracey is fun, nice, and full of the best energy! She motivates you to become more healthy and fit! I recommend this book and her videos to EVERYONE!!! She is just plain AWESOME!!!!

5 Stars Great Book
I followed the Sexy in 6 program after the birth of my second child and saw results. The eat plan is sensible and not too hard to figure out, but my favorite part is the DVD. Along with the book I got the Sexy in 6 blue DVD. That has been great. It is easy to do and Tracey keeps it fun. Before I had kids I was much better at going to the gym, but not it is a lot easier to workout with the DVD at home. I would recommend this book.

5 Stars i’ve benifited so from this.
it was high voltage and moving.

give it a try.

it was reasonably priced.

motivation enough.

give it a try!!

15 Minute Abs Workout

August 1, 2009 by Healthy Woman Now · Leave a Comment

15 Minute Abs Workout

Why waste your time with tedious gym sessions, when you can get a targeted express workout with the 15 Minute Abs Workout? This clever package gives you four expertly designed 15-minute abdominal workouts suitable for all levels of fitness. Accompanying DVD consists of four 15 minute workouts.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars ABTASTIC
This book is must for all you couch potatoes that have no time for exercise.Easy to follow format with simple but informative text and clean photos. The bonus DVD gives good straightforward instruction with moments of incentive along with music that keeps the beat up but doesn’t distract. Should turn this flab to ab in no time.A+++

5 Stars Training for a 5K
Over the past 7 years, I always made time for an aerobic workout. It wasn’t until recently that I realized strength training and core workouts are just as important. I have read several of Joan’s other books and was thrilled to find her “15 Minute Abs Workout.” This book is all about strengthening your core muscles and perfectly complements her “15 Minute Total Body Workout.” This DVD/book combo consists of 4 -15 minute workouts. The book should be read before attempting the DVD. Some of the exercises have such slight movement that on the DVD it’s hard to tell exactly what is being done. For example, the pelvic tilt. From the DVD it’s hard to see the movement. The book explains that the model is flattening her lower back to the floor. Once you figure that out, you can see it in the DVD, but without reading the book you wouldn’t know how to perform this exercise correctly.

Once you read the book, you are ready to go! Little equipment and space is needed so it can be done just about anywhere. This is perfect for people who travel so they don’t miss workouts while they are away from home. All the workouts start with a warm-up then get into the actual ab work and end with a cool down/stretching. It never seems impossible to do. And if you do struggle (or are not feeling challenged), it explains how to adjust the exercise to your level. Form is emphasized more than anything: it’s not about how many crunches you can, it’s about doing them correctly.

I highly recommend this book for anyone: from novice to professional. The only requirement: the desire to improve your body and life! This book/DVD covers all basis of a core workout and won’t disappoint.

5 Stars 15-Minute Abs

I’m finally through with doing large numbers of crunches in an effort

to improve my abs - slower is better, and changing things up is the

key. You can use this book to suit your needs: you can put the DVD in

and go to work immediately to get one of four abs workouts, including

a short warmup session, in the advertised 15 minutes. If you want to

dig a little deeper you can use the book to learn about the specific

muscles, read the FAQs, and get a fold-out overview of the sequence of

exercises for each workout. If you’re uncertain of the correct

procedures, you can also get a clear, detailed explanation of each

exercise and it’s purpose. I like to rotate the workouts on a daily or

weekly basis, so my abs are constantly challenged.

5 Stars Easy to use, well organized
I like this book as much as her earlier book on strength training, which I still take to the gym with me. The DVD demonstrates all the sequences that she recommends. Her explanations for each exercise are well written and easy to follow. These are the only books on exercise that I’ve found can truly replace a trainer! It’s a great resource for women who are trying to get rid of mid-life belly fat!

5 Stars The best 15 minutes yet!
As a chiropractor, I am constantly educating my patients on the importance of strengthening their core. One of the best features of this book is careful explanation of the different muscles of the abdomen and how to target them using proper form and execution.

The Q and A sections are very helpful and the author devotes one entire Q and A section to explaining the concept of “core training”. This sheds light on the importance of training the muscles of the trunk to function as a unit to support the spine and maintain its proper alignment.

Thanks, Joan, this is the best 15 minutes yet!

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Truly the Ultimate Book in Fitness
I wish I got this book from the very beginning. It comes with a comprehensive list of exercise routines and programs. It’s also peppered with relevant information throughout- from general fitness to how to do an exercise routine better. It even has a recipe section that I’m looking forward to trying out. I was going to take off one star for the lack of an Index section, but that’s just nitpicking.

3 Stars Kindle edition offers some perks but many drawbacks
First, this is a very good book. The ideas it presents are solid and workouts doable for the average person.

Pros: The kindle two offers much better images of the pictures than Kindle one. These are vital to understanding the exercises. It can also read the exercise description to you while you do them which is very nice.

Cons: The pictures are small and hard to see. Some pages with extremely small print that I was unable to adjust, don’t work well with kindle. Because of the way the book is organized you need to flip back through many pages and chapters. The exercises are in one area and in an other part you will find the reps for the different levels. You can footnote some of them but it is still a time consuming page flip when you are doing your exercise routine.

I like the book enough to buy both editions because I want the audio descriptions to use while doing the exercise. Since you can just as easily read them into your computer and have it read them back, you may want to stick with the book version.

4 Stars This is the complete book
This book should be called the complete exercise book. This book touches on everything. There are sections for the abs, upper body, thighs, hips & butt individually and a complete total-body program as well. They provide ways to do various exercises at home and in the gym. There are even recipes for delicious low-fat meals. The color pictures looked great too. This a well put together book.

4 Stars Fab Fitness Intro
I just wanted a book that would help me get started. I’m a smart girl with a little gym experience who just wants to be healthy, I didn’t want a book that talked to me like I was dumb, a fitness addict, or someone who’d never sweat a drop in their life. Thankfully, this book was that. Honest information, non-stigmatic, and encouraging with lots of pictures and great workout ideas. Love the personal testimonials, love the yoga section, and love the perfect amount of exercises offered to the reader. Minus one point for too many “don’t I look awesome coming out of the pool?” pictures and not enough information on fitness routines you can do at home or how to adapt your routine to a non-fitness oriented environment. Maybe next edition?

3 Stars OK
I’m terrible I bought this book because a friend recommended it to me and I just haven’t been able to follow through it. But, I am also bad at reading fitness books. It has found a good use as a nice prop when sifling beer out.
